Cottondale

Cottondale, located west of Marianna, is surrounded by picturesque farmland and forests, making it a popular destination for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. The town has always been conveniently located — close to the larger cities of Dothan, Alabama, to the north and Gulf of Mexico beaches to the south, making it a convenient place to live.

HISTORY

The town was named after William Cotton, a landowner who settled in the area in the 1820s. Cottondale was officially incorporated in 1903, and it has a rich history as a railroad town and agricultural center. The town was once home to a large lumber mill and a thriving peach industry.

During the 1960s, Cottondale was a bustling small town complete with hardware stores, small grocery stores, and other “mom and pop” businesses dotting its main drag. Visitors and travelers parked their cars along Highway 231, which runs through the town going north and south.

NATURAL WONDERS

Located to the east is Florida Caverns State Park. The state park features underground caverns, hiking trails, and recreational activities such as camping and fishing.
