Grand Ridge

The town of Grand Ridge was founded by the Porter family and is named after its sister city in Illinois. Grand Ridge is Jackson County’s 6th most populous community with around 900 residents.

HISTORY

Grand Ridge was settled around 1881 when the Pensacola & Atlantic Railroad ran tracks through the area. The Porter Family relocated from Grand Ridge, Illinois and purchased land in the area, and decided to name the town after their beloved home.

NATURAL WONDERS

Home to Ocheesee Pond, which has some of the best brim fishing in the state. City leaders are working to preserve areas of the pond. The Ocheesee Pond also is known for the legend of the “Wild Man” in Grand Ridge. Human-like in appearance with a “phenomenal growth of hair,” the legendary creature is said to have roamed the swamp since the 19th century.

The John Thomas Porter Recreational Complex has been the site of dozens of state baseball tournaments. City leaders have also rolled out plans to renovate and expand some of the town’s parks. Johnson Park, named after Ducky Johnson, will be extended out to the northwest in the future. It will include new baseball and softball fields, a walking track, and a football/soccer field.
