Greenwood

What sets Greenwood apart from the other townships in Jackson County are the tree-lined streets that give it the feel of a slow-moving town. However, Greenwood, with a population of more than 700 people, has more to offer than the views of small-town Florida.

HISTORY

Founded as a community in 1824 and incorporated in 1927, Greenwood is home to a collection of antebellum homes and structures.

Greenwood was founded at the intersection of two important early roads, little more than wagon trails in those days. One of the roads led from Neal's Landing on the Chattahoochee River (near the point where Florida, Alabama, and Georgia intersect) to the now vanished town of Webbville, near the modern city of Cottondale. The other road led from a landing lower down the Chattahoochee, west to the Chipola River, and on to Campbellton.

By the time of the Civil War, Greenwood was an important trading community surrounded by one of the most prosperous plantation districts in the Deep South.

NATURAL WONDERS

Greenwood is located near several lakes and rivers, including the Chipola River, which is known for its excellent fishing as well as canoeing and kayaking. You can catch a variety of freshwater fish in the area, including bass, catfish, and bream.

The Florida National Scenic Trail passes near Greenwood, offering miles of hiking opportunities through the area's forests and wetlands.

There are several golf courses located within a short drive of Greenwood, including the Indian Springs Golf Club in Marianna and the Great Oaks Golf Course in Marianna.

Between the natural views and the reminders of history are shops located in historic homes and buildings. Greenwood appreciates the heritage that infuses the area. Modern conveniences blend with old Florida history and nature to set Greenwood apart.
