Malone

A former logging town, south of the Chattahoochee River, Malone has a population of around 2,000 residents. The only municipality in Florida that’s a stone’s throw from two states—Alabama and Georgia. This town of only 1 square mile enjoys quiet, tree-lined streets and an abundance of outdoor activities.

HISTORY

Present-day Malone was part of the creation of Jackson County in 1822. The town was chartered in 1911, and the earliest settlers came for the long-leafed yellow pine and to build a lumberyard and sawmill.

The town was named for the Malone brothers – John, Ed, and George — who came from Dothan, Alabama. The Malones built the stores, still standing today, and laid out the streets.

One of America’s still-unsolved UFO encounters took place in the skies over Malone on December 6, 1955. A radar operator at Graham Air Base (now the Marianna Airport) observed an Unidentified Flying Object traveling north across Jackson County at a high rate of speed.

NATURAL WONDERS

Located about 20 minutes from Malone, Torreya State Park is a great place to explore nature. The park features hiking trails, fishing spots, picnic areas, and campgrounds. The park is named after the rare Torreya tree that grows in the area.

Blue Springs Recreation Area is located about 30 minutes from Malone and offers swimming, tubing, and snorkeling in crystal-clear spring water.
